4X4 SYSTEMS
The Jeep® brand has always been about choosing your own path. Our incomparable range of sophisticated 4x4 systems lets you find your own way up, down, through or around almost anything. Jeep® 4x4 vehicles are champions in all-weather capability so you'll be ready for anything Mother Nature throws your way.
FREEDOM DRIVE I™4X4
Hydroplaning can be a terrifying experience. This is when the vehicle's tires skim across the road like a skier on water without gripping it. Thankfully, having a Jeep® 4x4 system like Freedom Drive I™ helps in situations like this—and it can tackle snow, ice and mud like a champ. This state-of-the-art electronic system instantly responds to the need for added traction and responds to wheel-slippage by transferring power to the rear wheels when slippage occurs. Ready, willing and all-weather capable.
HOW THE FREEDOM DRIVE I™ 4x4 SYSTEM WORKS
The Freedom Drive I™ 4x4 system features an electronically controlled coupling that is attached to the rear differential. It monitors wheel slippage and actively transfers torque to the axle that can best use it. During high-traction driving (highway driving), this system transfers virtually no torque to the rear axle, but instantly transfers it to the rear wheels when conditions call for it. It automatically sends the optimum amount of torque to the rear axle when the front wheels slip. The 4WD LOCK feature can be engaged and the system electronically “locked" front and rear for added low speed control up to 35 mph.
When to use:
High range:
All road surfaces, including wet or snow-covered pavement, sand or gravel.
Lock:
Conditions requiring added low-speed power, technical driving and situations when added control is helpful (e.g. pulling a boat trailer out of water).

FREEDOM DRIVE II® 4X4
Tame the terrain. The Trail Rated® Freedom Drive II® Off-Road Group helps you maintain traction and control on the toughest terrain. You'll keep moving on steep grades and get through all-weather conditions like deeper snow, mud and sand. The Freedom Drive II Off-Road Group features a CVT2L transmission with Off-Road mode and a 19:1 crawl ratio that provides the torque multiplication needed for steep grades and crawling slowly in off-road events.
HOW THE FREEDOM DRIVE II®4x4 SYSTEM WORKS
An electronically controlled coupling, which is attached to the rear differential, is the heart of the Freedom Drive II® system. The electronic control module processes signals from the wheel speed sensors and the accelerator pedal to determine how much torque to actively transfer to the rear wheels. It then sends an electrical current to the ECC that is proportional to the amount of torque required. Like Freedom Drive I™, a 4WD lock feature is also provided. Recommended for true off-road situations including steep grades, wheel lift and rock or log climbing, the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package includes a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with a 19:1 crawl ratio (CVT2L) that engages when the off-road mode is activated as well as many other off-road enabling equipment features.
When to use:
High range:
All road surfaces, including wet or snow-covered pavement, sand or gravel
Off Road:
Conditions requiring added low-speed power, technical driving and situations when added torque is helpful (e.g. pulling a boat trailer out of water).
